Axel Witsel is set to leave Atletico Madrid when his contract with the Rojiblancos ends in the summer of 2025.
Spanish outlet Relevo report on Sunday that Atletico Madrid are set to release Axel Witsel in the summer of 2025 after the player’s contract with the club expires.
Witsel join from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. Initially playing in midfield before being convert to a three-man defence by Diego Simeone following injuries to several defenders.
Atletico Madrid signed Spanish international centre-back Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad last summer and also brought in Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona. But the Rojiblancos are also planning to sign another defender in the summer of 2025.
Atletico Madrid have reportedly no plans to offer Witsel a new deal as his current deal expires at the end of the season. Meaning the 35-year-old could leave Riyadh Air Metropolitano on a free transfer. Potentially with fellow senior defender Cesar Azpilicueta also in the mix. UFABET to make room for a younger signing.
Lenglet is only on loan from Barcelona. So a replacement for him (or signing him permanently) will need to be sought. On top of this, a successor to Axel Witsel will also be require as Relevo have report that the 35-year-old will almost certainly be leaving Los Colchoneros at the end of the season.
Witsel’s contract expires next June, and there are no plans for him to be offer a new deal. He’s been an important figure for Diego Simeone over the last three seasons. But given his age, there is a desire for fresh blood to be brought in.
Witsel (and possibly Lenglet) is unlikely to be the only centre-back leaving Atletico Madrid next summer. As fellow veteran Cesar Azpilicueta is also expect to move on. It leaves that club bosses will need to significantly address the position once again, which is not ideal.
